Transcripted Summary

A true leader has the ability to help people help themselves grow through coaching - whether that's with growing skills, expertise, or in changing behaviors to make a bigger impact.

There are various benefits of effective coaching for your teams:

  • It helps you learn to stay on task
  • It encourages you to set clear goals
  • It improves job satisfaction
  • It solidifies your values
  • It defines strategies for overcoming personal obstacles
  • It builds confidence
  • It develops transferable skills
  • It promotes employee engagement

I found something very interesting that I tend to use all the time, which is the five-step approach of effective coaching known as the TGROW.

  • T stands for topic - so what would you like to talk about?
  • G stands for goal - what do you want to achieve?
  • R stands for reality - describe the current situation.
  • O stands for options - what are your options?
  • W stands for will - what action will you take?

I use a problem-solving model - as I've just mentioned - the TGROW model.

Basically, we start from the topics such as "What do you want to talk about?"

Then slowly move towards the goal and ask your team members or an individual - "What do you want to achieve?"

Soon after that, you are meant to ask, "What challenges are you facing or what have you done so far?"

Then, talk about the options for the previous points by asking, "What have you thought about but not tried?" Or, "if you could start from scratch, what would you do?"

And finally, I ask the coachee to think for themselves about their goals or problems - "Which option would give the best results, or how committed are they?"

The TGROW method has yielded good fruit for my coachees and me, since it encourages a back and forth and requires the coachee to engage with their goals.

An example that I would like to share here is the role of a leader is not to come up with great ideas.

The role of a leader is to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.

Therefore, setting up coaching sessions regularly not only helps team members grow, but it also helps understand what's next for them, and also helps the lead understand an individual's aspirations and style to help them reach it.

The impact of this chapter is: your leadership encourages team members to speak up and ask for what they want in their careers.

Coaching opens up a space for conversations, and via those conversations, you can then understand your team members better, and help them reap results too.

Executive coaching helps a leader become more effective in their role.

When people feel safe enough to raise their hands and say, "I made a mistake", or "I need some help", the leader has created an environment where people feel safe to be themselves.
