Transcripted Summary

Respect. This word may seem small, but it holds a lot of weight.

Let's see how.

A true leader carries themself with empathy and respect for others to make a bigger impact.

Respect, trust, and empathy are valuable for all leaders.

It is vital to show respect to your team.

If you show respect, you gain respect.

This helps your team develop positively.

Something that I found really interesting from Dale Carnegie was the 10 approaches to gain respect from your team.

Let's see what they are:

  1. Help team members do better
  2. Respect and admire each team member
  3. Be friendly, but don't be friends
  4. Match words with actions
  5. Listen to team ideas and solutions and act on them
  6. Be prepared to change your mind
  7. Extend trust and responsibility
  8. Be humble
  9. Be consistent
  10. Celebrate team members' success

He also says, "the only way on earth to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it."

I would now like to share two scenarios based on respect.

Make professionalism a habit, and demonstrate respect with these simple yet powerful actions.

Simple things like smiling, saying "sorry", saying "thank you", being considerate and empathetic can make a big difference.

If a colleague is going through a hard time, take the time to have a coffee with them and see how you can help them or improve their situation.

Example two - imagine joining a new team - how, as a leader, would you work around that?

Well, you start off by learning about your team, treating them all the same way and with respect, asking for the team's needs and gaining respect, and supporting your team both in happy and difficult times.

The impact of this is this helps a leader be considerate and carry empathy for all.

"Great leaders have the skill of empathy and the ability to place themselves in their employees' situations to feel what they are feeling."
